Series information
The GB3 Championship is run by MSVR and comprises 24 races across eight events.
The weekend format typically includes a 20 minute qualifying session and three 20 minute races.
The grid for the first is set in qualifying order, while the grid for the second is in order of each driver’s second fastest lap. The race three starting order will be the reverse order of the fastest times achieved in qualifying prior to any penalties applied during or following qualifying. To be included in the reversal, each driver’s fastest lap time in qualifying needs to be within 103% of the overall fastest lap. Such a format provides exciting racing, the opportunity for drivers to develop overtaking skills.
Should an event incorporate a Race FOUR, the grid for that race will be decided by an average of the drivers two fastest lap times from Race ONE, TWO or THREE. Only one lap from each of the two races will be included in calculation of the average.
The minimum licence requirement for the GB3 Championship is National A. Testing is unrestricted.
Tech Specs
The Tatuus MSV-022 GB3 car is a significantly upgraded machine designed to meet the latest safety standards and improve performance.
The car features a completely new chassis, the Tatuus MSV-022, incorporating the halo, improved side-impact protection, revisions to the roll hoop, headrest, front anti-intrusion panel, seat and fuel cell areas.
A new aerodynamics package features a completely revised sculpted underfloor, diffuser, skid block, keel and bib, plus changes to the side pods, radiator ducts, damper cover and engine cover. Downforce levels are increased significantly over the previous specification, in the region of 20-25 percent.
To complement the increased aerodynamic performance is an upgraded specification for the highly rated two litre, four cylinder normally aspirated Mountune engine, to enable the unit to now produce over 250bhp at 8500 rpm, a 20bhp increase. As a consequence of the power hike the new car features a side air-intake and carbon airbox similar to earlier generation F3 cars, and a switch to a fly-by-wire port throttle inlet manifold system.
Most other well proven parts of the car, such as the Sadev gearbox, suspension, brakes and electronics remain unchanged, so teams can continue working with the outstandingly reliable and popular technical package.
Crucially, the upgrades ensure the 2022 specification car retains the lightweight, nimble and responsive handling characteristics and super-responsive normally aspirated engine that have been praised by drivers since 2016. The addition of the halo adds only around 12kg to the weight of the cars, which is more than compensated for by the increase in aerodynamic performance and power.
